ACA History
In 1986, this nonprofit organization began with a handful of volunteers who recognized the need for support of those affected with limb loss. In 1997, they received a cooperative agreement with the CDC.
In 1991, ACA began certifying amputees as "peer visitors." These peer visitors meet with new amputees to encourage and inspire them to still do great things with their life. This program now has over 900 peer visitors, and since 2013 has expanded the certification course open to family members.
Since 2002, ACA has managed to gain fair insurance policies for amputees in 20 states.
In 2010, Amputee Coalition of America made history by naming April National Limb Loss Awareness Month.
